Antigua and Barbuda Standard Specification
for the Labelling of Commodities Part 4: Labelling of Pesticides
0.0 FOREWORD
The benefits obtained by the use of pesticides in
agriculture and in buildings are apparent to everyone. However
there are distinct health risks to persons who handle them, use
them or come into contact with them. It is therefore necessary
that there is readily available information on the precautions
to be followed in the use of pesticides, on the treatment of pesticide
poisoning and on other precautions needed in handling crops or
animals that have been treated with pesticides. During transportation
and storage these substances are handled by workers, thus standardized
warning phrases, statements and symbols are required to convey
easily and simply information on risks and hazards associated
with pesticides.
When working with any chemical, the single most
important source of info+rmation is the label. Chemical pesticides
are inherently toxic substances to many forms of life and their
proper and safe use must be based upon information drawn from
a variety of scientific disciplines such as medicine, entomology,
plant pathology, chemistry and environmental toxicology, to name
a few. This information must be properly displayed on the labels
of the containing vessels. Thus an extremely important aspect
of regulation of pesticides is the requirement for labelling.
Pesticide labels are the most important means of communication
between the user (including vendors), the regulator and the pesticide
manufacturer.
This standard was prepared by the Antigua and Barbuda Bureau of
Standards and is intended to be a COMPULSORY standard. It shall
be read in conjunction with ABBS 2: 1990 Labelling of Commodities
General Principles.
1.0 SCOPE
This standard was prepared in an effort to ensure
safety during the use, handling and storage of pesticides. It
identifies the information, which shall appear on the labels of
pesticide packages and on any literature accompanying these packages.
