School Meals Resume in May

26th April 2016

The Ministry of Works and Housing has begun repairs on the roof of the building that houses the National School Meals Programme (NSMP), to prevent further disruptions in operations during rainy periods.

Work began on Monday, and workmen are replacing the existing roof in addition to re-wiring parts of the building.

Heavy rainfall last week forced officials to cancel meal preparations at the commercial kitchen located on Sir George Walter Highway, after water began pouring in, exposing a defective roof that led to a suspension of the preparation of meals for students in several public primary schools.

Officials of the NSMP say normal operations are expected to resume on 9th May, 2016, where hot lunches will be served to pupils in 25 public schools. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is again apologizing to parents for the inconvenience caused. In the interim, they are asked to provide meals for their children.

Approximately 3000 meals are served daily to students under the National School Meals Programme (NSMP).
