1st March 2016

High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in New York, Vasilios Philippou recently paid a courtesy call on Minister of Tourism, Economic Development, Investment and Energy the Hon. Asot Michael where he presented his credentials and held talks surrounding possible areas of collaboration between the two countries.

Ambassador Philippou highlighted the key areas of the tourism industry in Cyprus to Minister Michael stating that the industry which accounts for more than 50% of his country's gross domestic product is centered on niche areas such as medicine, golf, conference and religious tourism.

He noted that hotels in Cyprus make use of such technology as desalination and solar energy and this would present a perfect opportunity to engage in the sharing of experiences and technology.

In this regard, scholarships were offered in Tourism and Hotel Management to the Government of Antigua and Barbuda as well as a one week training course in Cyprus through the Tourist Office.

Minister Michael was elated at the offering and assured the High Commissioner that Antigua and Barbuda will make use of such scholarship opportunities.

The Tourism Minister delved into discussions surrounding the availability of airlift between Cyprus and the Caribbean with the hopes of increasing travel between the two countries to encourage trade and investment as well as promote tourism.
